How PC Do We Really Need To Be?
You know, I frequently find all things PC to be too OTT and I’m not alone. but occasionally I wonder if it’s due to my age. I have now decided it has nothing to do with my age because so many girls think the same way. Perhaps it’s something to do with being female? Am I allowed to say female?!
What prompted me to write about this topic is the bright sparks who decreed that the words of “Baa Baa Black Sheep”, which dates from 1731, be changed to “Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep” in case someone, somewhere is offended by a Nursery Rhyme that’s been around for over two hundred years. We must be aware of cultural diversity and strive to be all-inclusive. So it begs the question If we see black sheep in a field, what do we call them?
Children have no comprehension of this stupidity … they like the tune and the words are easy to understand. Presumably we must ban things like “Miss Polly had a Dolly” which is surely sexist.
I would love to say we have moved on since 1993 when the Noddy and Big Ears homosexual relationship was exposed. in The Truth About Noddy and Big Ears in The Independent.
A small list of ridiculous PC name changes
A Chairman is now a Chairperson. If you’re a woman and you want to be called a Chairwoman (and why wouldn’t you?), it’s unacceptable. In other words, not going to happen …
Black bags (the plastic things for rubbish) are now Refuse bags. I’d rather we worried less about their name and more about whether they were bio-degradable … or not. And the same applies to the trash in said black bags.
Short people are vertically challenged. I have no idea what you are called if your tall; does being nearly seven feet count as being vertically challenged? I suppose that depends on the number of low doorways causing concussion.
Thin I don’t know what you are if you’re fat or thin. Weight challenged?
Fat Not sure what the PC slant is on this … it seems to me if you’re fat, you’re fat. Maybe, just maybe, if we stopped dressing it up with various platitudes, we would be healthier and not living through a pandemic of obesity and diabetes.
Disabled I understand the Americans now call being disabled as being “differently able”. What? It doesn’t even make sense …
Noddy and Big Ears were banned because they were gay! And Enid Blyton’s Famous Five and Secret Seven were pasteurised, homogenised and sanitized beyond recognition. Poor old Enid Blyton got it in the neck for her lack of PC.
The PC Police are more powerful than the Nazi Grammarians
It’s safe to say the PC Police certainly don’t think the way we lesser mortals think. Personally, I think they are far more worrying than Enid Blyton or Noddy and Big Ears.
I know. This whole article is Politically Incorrect and for every person who agrees with me, there will be an equal number of people who disagree.
Probably my personal bete noir is that we are destroying the language and I’m surprised it all sits so well with Feminists (or whatever they call themselves) … we no longer have heroines or actresses because apparently, according to some luminary, gendered nouns are negative to women. Really?
I think we need to get a grip …
