Jeans & Fashion: not just for the 18 – 25s!
Some of you already know, and some of you have forgotten, but I bet that in your teenage-hood you decided that by the time you reached 40 life would be over and so would your interest in fashion and style. But you’re probably still wearing jeans so you’re hanging in there!
Going shopping and going through magazines it’s easy to think, even in your late twenties, that fashion and style are exclusive to the 18 – 25s.
No no no! Look closely at what you wear and what your 18-year-old-sister wears. If fashion is so different between the ages, why is she always borrowing your clothes and why aren’t you borrowing hers?
In fact the crossover in fashion is hardly noticeable, especially when you’re talking jeans … women of every age wear these fabulous pants from the toddler to the 80-plus style icon. The only age giveaway is the style of jean and the accessories. Not many women over 50 are overly fond of jeans low enough to show the crack. A lot of us, after children, aren’t fond of the little bellies we may acquire.
Jeans have become the wear-anywhere, wear-with-anything, dress-up, dress-down items we love, and need, in our wardrobes.
Did you know there are 45 different types of jeans? Yup … 45!
On a nostalgia kick, the jeans of the 50s and 60s were pretty standard and geared towards men. If you hadn’t noticed (really?!) that men have different shaped bums, you’re in for a treat. We started stepping outside the box in the sixties when flares came in … I still have a pair! They still work with outrageously high platform shoes …
There are plenty of clothes out there if you remain slim, but not all of us do. Some of us, as well as acquiring the jelly-belly-roll, are inclined to add a little excess weight all over..
Women are blighted by hormones … adolescence, teenage-hood, pregnancy, post-pregnancy, peri-menopause and then … menopause. Throughout all the hormone swings, style and fashion can be tricksy.
There are 3 jean-types every woman should have in her wardrobe. They are:
□ Dark-wash high-rise jeans; ankle length
□ Black jeans; ankle length
□ Traditional blue jeans; dark wash and/or distressed
A pair of straight-leg, high-waist jeans are flattering and really useful. The darker the colour, the slimmer and longer you will look. One of the problems with skinny, skinny jeans is that they make bums look wider and flatter. If you’re after the Kim K look, you won’t achieve it in these jeans,
Every woman needs a pair of plain black jeans in her wardrobe. The style is up to you but if you want to wear them with a shirt and jacket, best not to go for ultra skinny.
A pair of boyfriend jeans always look great. They are looser, more comfortable and more stylish than tight or flared or really baggy jeans. They’re flattering to every body size.
Distressed jeans have been around for a while and look as though they’re here to stay. I have a friend who is in her late 70s and she wears them a lot … they look sensational! If you’re not keen on baring some flesh, find a tailor who can patch the holes from the inside. Your jeans stay distressed but your skin is unseen.
The shoes or boots you choose to go with your jeans are important and if you look at these images, you will see how well each pair of shoes combines with the jeans.
