I don’t know how you feel about the way things look at Christmas but for me, and the rest of my family, the décor and table look were paramount in the preparations for The Big Day. My mother, who was always incredibly well-organised, had everything out ready to be used about a month beforehand! We didn’t worry whether it was eco-friendly or not … because it was!
Everything (and I mean everything) was washed, cleaned, polished and generally made ready before being set on the sideboard, or perhaps the table, covered in a snowy white cloth so clean it sighed as people walked past …
Many of us still have all the crockery and other paraphernalia we used then and they can continue to be used. They’ve become part of the family tradition and they’re good for the planet! They’re used, washed (by hand or dishwasher … remember, you use less water in a dishwasher!) and stored away somewhere safe and clean ready for next time … In fact, this is probably the most eco-friendly option of all …
This year, in the interests of helping us all to be more eco-friendly, I have found some fabulous alternatives in the crockery and cutlery department. Not least because Christmas has changed so much over the years and in many homes now, the blow-out banquet around the table just doesn’t happen.

In fact, almost everything you want or need that has to do with food or drink is now available in a compostable version, from napkins to bin liners.

Starting with large 10″ plates, seems to be the most logical way to go although there are so many useful items that really it’s hard to know where to begin.

I think these all look really nice and are certainly good for the planet. They are all sets and consist of a dinner plate (large) and a smaller plate (entrée size or just bread & butter!!) The cutlery that’s included is always useful even if you don’t want to use it on The Big Day. After all, you have your own cutlery that can be washed and re-used. Very eco-friendly.

This has been enormous fun to research and it is extraordinary how many eco-friendly products there are around. Whether it’s for Thanksgiving or Christmas and especially if you’re looking to move to a more relaxed version of The Big Day, this is the way to go.
In fact, for any function or event or party, why not start using all these things that are compostable and recyclable and NOT heading for landfill. If you’re wondering what are some of the things you can do to contribute to saving our planet, this is one of them.
On a personal note, my grandmother’s dinner service, which is huge and still mostly intact, was a present to her from the Sunday School where she taught, when she got engaged in 1910. Considering it’s age, it really is in good shape! If anything ever breaks it can be used as mosaic. See? Constantly re-using …
